Simulations as the Basis for Selecting the Right Storage System

Why Simulation?

The selection of a battery storage system has a decisive impact on the profitability, safety, and lifetime of a project. With detailed simulations of load profiles, electricity prices, and market models, we determine the optimal storage size and operating strategy.

This makes it possible to avoid revenue losses due to curtailment, take advantage of new market models, and transparently evaluate economic viability. The result: a well-founded basis for decision-making that provides security for investors and tailors the storage system precisely to your project.

Methodology

  • Load and generation profiles (PV/wind, consumption, grid constraints) are modeled at high temporal resolution (e.g. 15 min/5 min).
  • Dispatch optimization (self-consumption, arbitrage, balancing services, peak shaving, multi-use) with technical constraints (SOC limits, efficiencies, C-rate).
  • Degradation model (calendar & cycle) to forecast capacity losses, efficiency, and residual value.
  • Scenarios & sensitivities: prices, curtailments, CAPEX/OPEX, subsidy conditions, grid fees.

Input Data

  • Location and weather data, historical/forecast electricity prices, grid tariffs & demand charges.
  • Technical datasheets (BMS limits, DoD, round-trip efficiency, temperature range).
  • Project and financial parameters (CAPEX, OPEX, interest rate, lifetime, residual value, insurance).

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • NPV, IRR, payback period, cash flow profile.
  • Number of cycles, full cycle equivalents, expected lifetime and residual capacity.
  • Revenue contributions by market model (self-consumption, arbitrage, balancing services, etc.).
  • Avoided curtailment losses and peak shaving savings.

Result & Benefits

  • Tailored system sizing (kWh/kW) and optimized operating strategy.
  • Transparent investment decision with reliable financial metrics.
  • Techno-economic alignment: return targets vs. lifetime/degradation.
  • Bank & investor ready: documentation for financing, tenders, and insurers.

Accurate Shading Models through Drone-Based Mapping

High-resolution drone surveys combined with photogrammetric evaluation enable the precise capture of 3D terrain and object data. Based on this data, site-specific shading models can be generated with high spatial accuracy. The models take into account both topographical features and relevant objects (e.g., buildings, tree lines, infrastructure).

These models allow for:

  • the accurate assessment of temporary and permanent shading effects on module rows or inverters,

  • the integration into simulation-based yield forecasts (e.g., using PVsyst, Helios 3D, or Rhino/Grasshopper),

  • the identification of potential energy losses due to shading at specific times of day or year (solar path analysis),

  • and the optimization of module layout and orientation during the planning or retrofit analysis phase.

Especially for ground-mounted PV systems with complex terrain profiles or heterogeneous boundary conditions(e.g., sloped areas, surrounding vegetation, overhead lines, or masts), drone-generated 3D models offer a significant improvement in accuracy compared to conventional planning documents or satellite-based assessments.

Teambuilding Event 2024

Our annual helioconsult team-building event has now become a well-established tradition. This year, immediately after a successful Intersolar in Munich, we headed to the mountains – specifically to the Kleinwalsertal. From the Travel Charme Ifen Hotel, we were able to explore the Alpine surroundings excellently and then relax in the spacious wellness area. Of course, the culinary aspect was not neglected either. All of this was done to gather new ideas in a relaxed atmosphere with all the employees and to discuss plans for the coming year.

More about the event you can find on our Insta-Story.

Teambuilding Event 2023

This year again there was a special event for our small team and their families.
This time we went on a culinary journey and attended a cooking course at Widmanns Albleben in Königsbronn. A special evening with many new impressions and time to exchange ideas away from everyday business.

More about the event you can find on our Insta-Story.

Teambuilding Event 2022

At this year’s team building event, we went sailing with our employees to Lake Constance last weekend. The challenges were successfully mastered, the team grew even closer together and most importantly, everyone had a lot of fun.

Thank you for a successful Intersolar Munich 2022

We would like to thank you for a successful Intersolar Munich 2022 and for all the interesting discussions with our customers and partners!

Meet us at Intersolar Munich 2022

May 11th to 13th 2022, Intersolar Europe will open its doors again in Munich. Of course, helioconsult will be part of the show. Make an appointment with us right now at. We are already very excited to meet you there.

Drone-Thermography now also part for systems <750 kWp

Drone-Thermography is part of our inspection services for any size of system since 2021. Especially for projects <750 kWp a game changer.

Helioconsult on successful course

In 2020 helioconsult has inspected more than 150 projects to reduce the technical and financial risks for our customers.
Combined with our yield reports and due diligence services we supported our customers with more than 200 projects between 62 kWp and 50 MWp in capacity
